Training volume calculator (tonnage)
How to use it
Enter one row per exercise: working sets, reps per set, and the working weight. The calculator multiplies them and sums across rows, which is the standard volume load = Σ (sets × reps × weight).
Two rules that decide whether the number is worth anything:
- Leave warm-up sets out. Their volume moves with how the client slept and what they did yesterday, and it will bury the real trend in noise. What matters is picking one convention and not switching mid-block.
- Enter bodyweight work at the client's body mass. Three sets of eight pull-ups otherwise score zero despite the work being done. Excluding them entirely is equally valid, as long as you exclude them every time.
If sets within an exercise differ in load, split them into separate rows: "Squat 1 × 5 × 100" and "Squat 3 × 8 × 80".
Volume load is not "volume"
These two get used interchangeably and that causes most of the confusion in the topic.
Volume load is kilograms: weight times reps. Training volume in the hypertrophy literature usually means the number of hard sets per muscle group per week, counted in sets, not tonnes. A client can add reps at a light weight, raise volume load, and leave weekly hard sets untouched. Or move to heavier weights for fewer reps, drop volume load, and get stronger.
Volume load answers "how much work was done". It does not answer "was the stimulus enough".
What the number will not tell you
It does not distinguish exercises: 100 kg in a deadlift and 100 kg in a biceps curl contribute identically and stimulate nothing alike. It ignores proximity to failure, so a set with three reps in reserve and a set to failure score the same. It ignores range of motion and tempo. And it is not comparable between clients, only between one client and their own past.
Use it three ways: compare within a single exercise rather than across a whole session, read the trend over three to four weeks rather than a single day, and treat three flat weeks at constant set count as a plateau worth acting on.
Doing this by hand does not scale
One session takes a couple of minutes to total. Fifteen clients is an hour of arithmetic a week, and only if every set was written down legibly in the first place.
